How to Use the Photosynthesis Simulator

Getting Started 🌿

This simulator allows you to explore how different environmental factors affect the rate of photosynthesis in a plant. The visual area shows molecules being absorbed (light, CO₂, H₂O) and produced (C₆H₁₂O₆ and O₂), while the graph tracks the plant's performance over time.

Understanding the Controls

You can adjust four key factors using the sliders:

  • Plant Type: Choose between a C3 plant (common, like a rose) or a C4 plant (better adapted to hot, dry climates, like corn).
  • Light Intensity: Controls how much light energy is available. Photosynthesis stops if there is no light.
  • CO₂ Concentration: Controls the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.
  • Water Concentration: Controls the amount of water available to the plant's roots.
  • Temperature (°C): Sets the ambient temperature. Notice how C3 and C4 plants respond differently to temperature changes!

Running the Simulation

  • Start Simulation / Resume Simulation: Click this button to begin or pause the animation and data collection. The graph will start to plot data points automatically every second.
  • Day/Night Toggle: This button turns on a simulated day/night cycle. In this mode, light and temperature are automatically controlled, and the sliders will be disabled.
  • Reset: This will stop the simulation, clear the graph, and set all sliders back to their default values.

Interpreting the Results

The Output Panel provides real-time data:

  • Rate of Photosynthesis: A calculated value representing the overall speed of the process.
  • Glucose Production (C₆H₁₂O₆): Shows the rate at which the plant is creating sugar for energy.
  • Oxygen Production (O₂): Shows the rate at which oxygen is released as a byproduct.

The Photosynthesis Metrics Over Time graph will show you how these values change throughout the simulation. You can use this to see the long-term effects of different conditions.

Have fun experimenting with different conditions and plant types! Let me know if you would like to know more about the specifics of the C3 or C4 photosynthesis pathways.
